1. About Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry
Starting as a ship repair yard, Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding has evolved into a modern enterprise engaged in both shipbuilding and repair. While bulk carriers have been its primary vessel type, the company has focused on technological innovation to add value and upgrade its product offerings. As Chen Zhihua, Deputy Director of the Strategic Planning Department of Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding, stated, “We continuously add new value through iterative technology upgrades, striving to move up the value chain beyond traditional low-end segments.”
In response to the global shift towards greener and low-carbon shipping, Beihai Shipbuilding has proactively transformed. It developed the world’s first 325,000 DWT methanol dual-fuel bulk carrier and methanol-ready ultra-large bulk carriers, securing eight ship orders. It also completed the development of Shandong Province’s first 319,000 DWT ultra-large oil tanker, winning five orders from internationally renowned shipowners. Currently, Beihai holds 73 shipbuilding orders, with green vessels accounting for 82.19% of its portfolio. The total contract value exceeds 40 billion RMB, with production scheduled through the end of 2028.
Gu Kechao, Deputy Party Secretary and Deputy General Manager of Beihai, said, “We aim to make our vessels stand out, not only leading in quantity globally but also excelling in quality and profitability.” The company has successfully delivered more than 80 vessels including bulk carriers, ore carriers, product tankers, and offshore engineering ships, such as eight second-generation intelligent 400,000 DWT ultra-large ore carriers, the “Shenqian” mother ship, “Ocean Petroleum 119” FPSO hull, and CNOOC Liuhua FPSO hull.
Focusing on large and high-tech vessels, Beihai is advancing integrated information management in design, production, and supply chain. Its 5G-enabled digital intelligent shipyard has been recognized as a municipal-level digital workshop, accelerating the company’s smart upgrade.
