I. Introduction to Shanxi Xilongchi Pumped Storage Power Station
Overview
The Shanxi Xilongchi Pumped Storage Power Station is located in Wutai County, Shanxi Province, jointly funded by State Grid Xinyuan Holdings Co., Ltd. and four other investors.
The station is equipped with four 300 MW vertical-axis single-stage reversible pump-turbine motor units, with a rated head of 624 m, generating 1.8 billion kWh per year and consuming 2.4 billion kWh annually for pumping.
The main facility includes upper and lower reservoirs, underground powerhouses, and water conveyance systems. The upper reservoir has a total capacity of 4.851 million m³, and the lower reservoir totals 4.942 million m³.

Function & Role
The power station plays a critical role in peak-shaving, frequency regulation, and backup support for the North China Grid and Shanxi Grid. It participates in energy market operations, storing water during low-price periods and generating electricity during peak demand, ensuring grid safety and promoting green development.
Phase II Expansion
Phase II began in September 2022 with exploratory tunnels and plans for 1.4 million kW installed capacity. The preliminary feasibility study was approved in July 2022, and the project is listed as a key national “14th Five-Year Plan” initiative.
